Introducing Sarhys Weighill – The Start of a Fire Safety Career Journey

At Fireline, we’re passionate about developing the next generation of fire safety professionals—and today, we’re excited to introduce Sarhys, who joined us a couple of months ago as a Trainee Fire Safety Consultant.
This is the first in a series where we’ll be following Sarhys’ journey as she builds her career in the fire safety industry.
Finding Her Path into Fire Safety
Sarhys’ journey into fire safety didn’t follow a traditional route—and that’s exactly what makes it so interesting.
She started her working life at just 17, taking on a summer job as a lifeguard. What began as something temporary quickly turned into something more meaningful. It was here that she discovered a real interest in compliance, safety, and responsibility for others.
Rather than pursuing university or a full-time office-based role, Sarhys knew she wanted something more hands-on, practical, and purposeful.
“I really enjoyed the compliance side of lifeguarding and the health and safety aspect. Fire safety felt like a natural progression—it’s all driven by standards and doing things the right way.”
When she came across Fireline’s trainee role, she immediately felt it was the right fit.

First Impressions – And Raising the Bar
While preparing for her interview, Sarhys took the time to research the industry—and quickly came across BAFE and third-party accreditation.
She was particularly impressed to learn that Fireline holds BAFE SP101 accreditation, recognising our commitment to quality and doing things properly.
That attention to standards resonated with her—and confirmed she was applying to the right company.
Settling Into the Team
Like many people entering a new industry, Sarhys had some initial concerns—particularly around being new, younger, and entering a traditionally male-dominated field.
But those concerns quickly disappeared.
She’s now fully embedded within the team, working alongside experienced engineers and building confidence every day.
“I was a bit nervous about how I’d be received, but everyone has been really supportive. I feel like I’ve fit in straight away.”
Learning, Development & Real Experience
Sarhys is part of a structured training programme, designed to give her a strong foundation across all areas of fire safety.
Her development includes:
- Fire extinguisher servicing (BS 5306)
- Fire door inspections
- PAT testing
- Foundation Fire Risk Assessments
- Fire safety training delivery
She attends monthly review meetings with her mentor Lee and manager Sarah, ensuring she stays on track and continues to develop.
She’s also spending time shadowing different engineers, gaining real, hands-on experience across a wide range of sites and industries.
“There’s a lot to take in, but I feel like I’m learning so much. I love the variety—no two days are the same.”

A Natural Problem Solver
Outside of work, Sarhys enjoys hands-on projects—having already built her own shed and even a custom cat tree.
That practical mindset is already proving valuable in her role, where problem-solving and attention to detail are key.
Real Experiences – From Factories to Lighthouses
One of the things Sarhys enjoys most is the variety of environments she gets to work in.
From everyday commercial sites to more unique locations, each job brings something different.
A recent highlight? Climbing to the top of a lighthouse while on site with one of our engineers.
“It’s such a mix of places and people—it definitely keeps you on your toes.”
Making Her Mark
Sarhys has already made a strong impression—not just internally, but with customers too.
Despite some clients being more accustomed to seeing male engineers, feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
Her mentor Lee noted:
“Sarhys really excels in her approach to customer service. She’s confident when speaking with customers and explains compliance in a clear, professional way.”

What’s Next?
Sarhys is continuing to build her knowledge and is particularly looking forward to completing her BS 5306 course in May.
She’s also keen to expand her skills further—especially in PAT testing and fire risk assessments.
A Word from Sarah
“I was absolutely thrilled to appoint Sarhys. From the outset, she showed enthusiasm and a real drive to learn. She has already become a valued member of the team, and we truly believe she has the potential for an exceptional career in fire safety.”
